Yesteryear Collection

First World War 1914-1918.
The first replacement of British men by British women during the war, was achieved by the First Aid Nursing Yeomanry at Calais in January, 1916.
The corps was commanded by Miss Franklin and was commissioned by the British Red Cross Society to act as ambulance drivers and mechanics.
The Crossley ambulance was one of many types used for the convoying of British wounded, in and around Calais.
The drivers of F.A.N.Y. up to the autumn of 1918, won nine military medals; three Crois De Guerre; the Croix Civique and the Order of Leopold II.

An excellent history of the Yeomanry can be found at the Corps site together with many interesting side articles and photographs of the Corps in action (with their vehicles).
